Invest in Kids, Invest in Early Learning
Our donor contributions have helped us touch the lives of thousands of children. And a gift from you today will help us to ensure that the children in our community have the same opportunities in life.
Did you know that 57% of children entering kindergarten in Alameda County are not prepared with the skills they need to succeed? And only 25% of African American and Latino boys and 34% of Latina girls are kinder ready. Data proves that students who start school behind, stay behind. We are committed to closing the opportunity gap.
Through our Invest in Kids, Invest in Early Learning Campaign, BANANAS is combatting the effects of poverty for young children where they live, learn, and play.
Children who receive a high quality early childhood experience are more likely to graduate from school, maintain a job, and contribute to society. Investments in high quality early childhood programs have been shown to return at least 7 percent per year for every dollar invested.
So much so that more than 300 business leaders and organizations from 44 states signed a letter in May 2013 asking President Obama and Congress to support and invest in high quality early childhood programs.
The reality is many poor children do not have access to high quality early childhood development and learning opportunities, putting them at a disadvantage from the start. Despite pleas from some of the top leaders in our nation, the investment in our most precious assets, our children, has continued to diminish.
All children need to talk, read, sing, and play during the critical early years of their development to fulfill their future potential. Children who are not exposed to early learning are 60% more likely to never attend any college and 25% more likely to drop out of high school. This is why BANANAS is committed to ensuring that all of our children have access to quality early learning experiences.
Your gift to the Invest in Kids, Invest in Early Learning Campaign is extremely important because it will offer immediate services to children and their caregivers through:
- Bringing much needed playgroups to low-income neighborhoods in Oakland where our facilitators will model how everyday activities can become learning experiences for children
- Distributing free materials such as books, toys, games, and learning kits
- Providing professional development opportunities to child care providers focusing on the importance of play in preparing a child to succeed in kindergarten
- Offering parent education classes to support parents in raising healthy, confident children
No matter what amount you can contribute, you will be investing in making a lasting difference for young children. Everyone at BANANAS joins me in thanking you your generous partnership and support.
